The Sanitation Division is responsible for collecting residential and commercial solid waste and recyclable materials.

COLLECTION SERVICE

Weekly collection service at the designated alley or curb location is provided to all residential properties with city utility service. The minimum amount per household is $22.73 per month, which includes (1) 96-gallon polycart, with smaller polycarts available. Additional polycarts are available for $11.36 each per month. For customers who are physically unable to move the polycart and have no one else available to do it, other arrangements may be made by calling 620-441-4460. Billing is handled by the Finance Department. Please call 620-441-4401 to start or stop service or to obtain information about your bill.

 

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

Sanitation crews operate Monday through Friday except for New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Presidents' Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, Floating Holiday (designated annually by the City Manager). Holiday schedules will be published in the monthly utility bill, City Website, and Facebook. A PDF can be found at the bottom of this website detailing each holiday's sanitation schedule for 2024.

 

COLLECTION GUIDELINES

  • Place all refuse and household trash in the polycart at the designated curb or alley location by 6:00 a.m. on pick-up day
  • No construction material of any kind
  • No unauthorized trash containers (metal or plastic cans) will be emptied. Only city polycarts will be emptied
  • All refuse left outside the polycart must be limited to 1-2 bags. (Trash must be IN cart)
  • All other refuse left outside the poly cart will be considered a payload. This includes boxes and items too large to fit in the polycart. These items will be considered an extra fee of $30.81, with more items the price will increase. The fee will be added to the utility bill
  • Store the polycart on private property
  • Do not overfill the cart, as it may be too heavy to be picked up
  • Make sure the polycart lid is closed at all times
  • All trash placed in the polycart must be in plastic bags
     

POLYCART INFORMATION/MAINTENANCE

  • Each polycart has a serial number and will remain the property of the City
  • The City will take care of normal repairs
  • Customers will be responsible for damage to polycarts resulting from neglect or abuse, such as damage from hot coals or puncture holes
  • All incidents regarding damage due to vandalism or theft of the cart should be promptly reported to the Police Department. Upon completing the police report, contact the Public Services Department to schedule a replacement cart at 620-441-4444
  • The polycart should be cleaned regularly by customers with water and household detergent. The use of plastic bags will help keep the polycart clean.
     

YARD WASTE

To divert natural materials from the County Landfill, the F Street Limb & Compost Site is open and free to city residents. Operating hours are Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Sanitation Department will not pick up bags of leaves and tree branches.

 

SPECIAL PICK-UPS

Special pick-up service for items such as large appliances (Freon must be removed) and furniture may be arranged by calling 620-441-4460. These items should be placed at the designated area for collection before calling for the special pick-up service. Contractors must dispose of material and debris, including carpets generated by construction projects. The contractor should dispose of the woodcut or trim by a professional tree service. The rate for this service is $30.81 minimum per call.

 

RENTAL DUMPSTERS

Portable 4-yard dumpster rentals are available for residential customers upon signing a rental agreement and paying the fees in advance in the Finance Office. The setting fee is $45. Every time the dumpster is dumped and returned, there is an additional $45 fee. The dumpster will be placed for three days. After the three days, the resident has the rental dumpster every day, and $5 will be added to the bill.

16 Yard Dump Trailer is available for residential customers upon signing a rental agreement and paying the fees in advanced in the Finance Office. The setting fee is $125.00. Every time the dump trailer is dumped and returned, there is an additional $125.00 fee. The dump trailer will be placed for three days.
